A Day Trip to Mt Fuji, Hakone and Owakudani

I took a day trip to visit Mt Fuji, Hakone and Owakudani.

I booked my tour via The Gray Line – http://www.jgl.co.jp/inbound/index.htm . All the details of the tour are present in the link : http://www.jgl.co.jp/inbound/contents/fuji.html

These trips have a Motorcoach  ( Bus 😊 ) pick up service from major hotels. So – you may want to get to the nearest pick up point ON TIME ! Remember this is Japan – BE ON TIME !

They also have lunch included but I chose not to have the set menu in this trip. I ordered my own food at the hotel !

The first stop is at the Mt Fuji 5th Station ( this is the maximum point that a Motorcoach goes to ) . In case the weather doesn’t permit the coach to go until there, there will be alternate spots that you will be taken to. When I went , it was snowing 😊 hence we couldn’t go to the 5th Station.

The best part of this trip was the visit to the Owakudani valley. The only way now to get to Owakudani valley is via the Hakone Ropeway.

Owakudani is the area around a crater which was created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3000 years ago. It is an active volcanic zone with number of sulfurous fume vents, hot springs and hot rivers. Apparently, Owakudani has good views of Mount Fuji on clear days.

Here you can purchase BLACK eggs, cooked in the naturally hot water, whose shells are blackened by the sulfur and which are said to prolong one’s life by seven years. Also available here is a magic box which is carved in wood and these boxes are impossible to open unless you know a combination of moves. Unlike keys & locks, and passwords, it takes much more to open this box. A box to hide secrets 😊

After your visit to Owakudani, you are taken on a pirate boat cruise on lake Ashi which will give you some fantastic views !

I chose to return via the bullet train to Tokyo and not though the motorcoach.  So, the motorcoach stops at Odawara station from where I used my JR pass to travel to Tokyo via the bullet train.
